Year 5 and 6

Happy New Year!

We hope you have all had a restful break and are raring with energy for the new year. School continues to be ‘different’ due to the restrictions of Covid-19 but the children continue to keep smiling and face new challenges positively.

English and Maths

In Maths this half term, we will be completing our learning under the theme of fractions. Year 5 will then be introduced to the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages whilst Year 6 will be learning about ratios and algebra. Children will continue to build on their fluency in quick recall times tables.

Our focus text in English this half term, links to our Water Worlds theme. We will be reading ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ by Michael Morpurgo and writing opportunities will be linked to this story and the themes it covers. We are lucky enough to have a class set of these books but should children wish to bring in their own copy they may do so.

Communication

Keeping in touch is very important to us in the Year 5 and 6 team as it is throughout the school. Should you have any queries or questions please do not hesitate to contact the office in the first instance.

Communications will be forwarded to us and we will endeavour to respond to you as soon as possible outside of teaching hours.

Please do not hesitate to contact us with any thoughts as we want to ensure that we can deal with any issue which may arise as soon as possible.

Reading

It is important that all children continue to read, and be read to, widely and regularly. Whether it be a novel, comic or technical manual it all supports widening of vocabulary and understanding. All children need their reading records signing weekly by a parent or guardian.

PE

PE lessons will take place on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Initially all PE lessons will take place outside, where possible, so please ensure that your child has suitable clothing for all weather eventualities.

We will be focusing on outdoor and adventurous activities. Children will be learning skills in orienteering and team work along side basketball and hockey skills to build fitness.

Our school values will be carefully interwoven into all PE lessons to ensure all children enjoy and develop their physical education.
